What does PU coating mean on a waterproof tent?

PU stands for polyurethane, a flexible coating applied to the inside of the fabric. It blocks liquid water from passing through the weave. The coating is measured in millimeters of hydrostatic head, though that rating is not always listed.

Are taped seams necessary for a waterproof shelter?

Taped seams cover the stitch holes that would otherwise let water seep through. Without taping, a waterproof fabric can still leak at the seams. Most shelters labeled waterproof include taped or sealed seams on the rainfly and floor.

Can I re-waterproof a tent or shelter?

Yes, spray-on and wash-in waterproofing treatments are available for nylon and polyester shelters. They restore the durable water repellent finish that makes water bead up. Taped seams that have peeled can be replaced with seam sealant.

Does waterproof fabric also block wind?

A waterproof coating blocks most airflow through the fabric, so it also stops wind. That is why waterproof shelters can feel stuffy without vents or mesh panels. Breathable waterproof fabrics allow some vapor to escape but are heavier and more expensive.
