What does ripstop mean on a nylon tent or tarp?

Ripstop is a weave with thicker threads at intervals that stop a tear from running across the fabric. It does not make the nylon waterproof on its own. A coating or laminate handles water resistance.

Is nylon strong enough for a backpacking tent?

Coated nylon is the standard shell for lightweight backpacking tents and tarps. It handles rain and wind when seams are taped and the pitch is tensioned. Abrasion against rock or sharp ground is where thinner nylon gives way first.

How does silnylon differ from standard coated nylon?

Silnylon uses a silicone treatment instead of a polyurethane coating, which lowers weight and improves packability. It can be slippery to pitch and may need re-tensioning after rain. Standard coated nylon grips better and costs less weight for the same coverage.

Does nylon mesh block bugs in a screen house or inner tent?

Fine nylon mesh keeps mosquitoes and small insects out while letting air through. It is not a rain barrier, so mesh shelters need a fly or tarp overhead in wet weather. Inner tents pair mesh walls with a separate waterproof shell.

Nylon shows up in flat tarps sized for overhead cover, inner tents that pair with a separate fly, screen houses for hammock or ground use, and freestanding dome and backpacking tents. One-person and two-person backpacking tents use it for the shell and sometimes the floor. Camouflage and solid green are common on hunting and bushcraft shelters.

Nylon against other shell fabrics

Nylon is lighter than canvas and packs smaller, which matters when the shelter is carried. It is less abrasion-resistant than heavier woven fabrics and can stretch when wet, so pitch tension needs attention. Oxford fabric tents trade some weight for thicker weave and longer wear.
